I found an Injured Animal!
If you have any questions, concerns, or are unsure if the animal is in need of help call a licensed wildlife rehabilitator BEFORE you move the animal.
Be Cautious:
Wildlife can cause serious injury and can spread disease if you are not cautious.
Rescue Process:
- Have a covered container ready before attempting to move the animal.
- Place a towel on the bottom of container to allow the animal to grip something during transport.
- Examples: A sturdy cardboard box or container with small holes already poked in. A sturdy pet carrier.
- Never touch the animal bare-handed. Avoid touching if at all possible.
- Use rubber gloves, thick work gloves, or a towel to avoid touching.
- Gently slide or scoot the animal into the container with a broom or stick to avoid touching.
- Do not give any food or water.
- Place in a warm, dark, and quiet area away from pets and children. This will keep the animal calm and stress free until you are able to transport it to a rehabilitator.
- Examples: Garage, bathroom, shed.
- While in transport:
- Never take the animal out of the box. The animal may jump away and become trapped in your car somewhere.
- Keep music off and voices at a low volume.
