POSITION TITLE: Seasonal Wildlife Rehabilitator
POSITION SUMMARY: The Seasonal Wildlife Rehabilitator (SWR) is a member of New Mexico Wildlife Center’s hospital team. Working with this team the SWR is responsible for the care, rehabilitation, and release of approximately 1,000 animals. The position supervises and assists in training of hospital interns and volunteers. The SWR works to advance the Center’s mission by:
• Applying current best practices ensuring the best attainable medical care, treatment and rehabilitation outcomes for wildlife patients.
• Assisting the Staff Veterinarian in the care and treatment of wildlife patients and NMWC’s ambassador animal collection.
• Supporting practices placing NMWC as a national leader in wildlife care and rehabilitation.
CLASSIFICATION: Seasonal, Full time, non-exempt
POSITION DATES: April through September
REPORTS TO: Staff Veterinarian
SUPERVISES: Wildlife hospital volunteers and interns
WORK HOURS: 5 days/40 hours per week. Some night, weekend, and holiday work hours required. In-state travel required. Weekly schedules may vary, workdays may not be consecutive.
SALARY & BENEFITS: $19.00 per hour; accrued paid sick leave
OVERTIME: Overtime at 1.5x hourly rate with upon prior written approval of supervisor.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Animals and Care
• Move animals through the rehabilitation process in a timely manner and ensure that animal care needs are met and treatments are appropriately administered.
• Maintain highest quality of care standards and oversee rehabilitation treatment plans.
• Collaborate with Staff Veterinarian to develop and carry out treatment plans.
• Keep accurate and detailed animal health records and document daily animal care; assist the coordination of veterinary and diagnostic procedures.
• Ensure animals are handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety.
• Assist other hospital staff in the coordination, transport, and release of hospital patients.
Teamwork
• Keep hospital team apprised of animal intakes, in-house patient status, animal care needs, quality of animal care, patient procedures, and hospital needs.
• Supervise interns and volunteers; assist with implementing summer internship program.
• Maintain communication, including attending NMWC and hospital staff meetings.
• Support education team in medical treatments for ambassador animals.
• Support other NMWC staff in answering wildlife-related phone inquiries.
• Identify maintenance and/or safety needs in hospital areas and outdoor enclosures.
• Communicate supply and/or inventory needs to hospital team for re-order.
Professionalism
• Use all hospital equipment in an appropriate and safe manner, follow appropriate guidelines and protocols and obtain training if needed before operating any equipment.
• Maintain all wildlife hospital areas (inside and out) in well-organized manner.
• Represent NMWC in a professional manner at all times.
Secondary Responsibilities
• Support rehabilitation research programs as requested.
• In collaboration with the hospital team and other NMWC staff assist with maintenance projects in the hospital and outdoor enclosures.
• Participate in and assist with on and off-site special events.

QUALIFICATIONS
• A passion for NMWC’s mission and a keen interest in conservation.
• B.S. in biology or related field. Prior experience may be considered in place of education.
• Two-years experience in wildlife rehabilitation with a combination of mammals, songbirds, raptors, and reptiles preferred. One year of wildlife rehabilitation experience required.
• Prior experience managing volunteers and/or interns in a rehabilitation setting preferred.
• Pre-exposure rabies vaccination required; proof of vaccination or titer required.
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds safely.
• Must be legally entitled to work in the USA.
• Must be able to humanely perform euthanasia on a regular basis as well as personally and professionally handle the emotional aspects of euthanasia.
• Must be able to read, write, and speak clearly in English so that written and verbal instructions can be given and followed.

POSITION TITLE: Wildlife Rehabilitation Intern
PURPOSE: Wildlife Rehabilitation Interns will assist in all aspects of care in the wildlife hospital with the goal of achieving the best outcome for each patient. This includes (but is not limited to): physical assessment and stabilization of incoming animals, food preparation and feeding, medication administration, record keeping, following veterinary orders, animal husbandry and care, and release preparation.

REPORTS TO: Staff Veterinarian and Wildlife Rehabilitators
WORK HOURS: Work hours are variable, typically 5 days/40 hours per week. Some nights, weekend, and holiday work hours required. Some in-state travel may be required.
POSITION SUMMARY: This internship is very hands-on from start to finish. Interns will fulfill daily hospital tasks and responsibilities. We strive to provide a well-rounded introductory internship to wildlife rehabilitation focused on all types of native New Mexico wildlife. Working conditions can be cold, hot, wet, and dry. Interns should be comfortable getting dirty as well as comfortable around gory and messy situations within the clinic. We rehabilitate approximately 1,000 animals (birds, mammals, and reptiles) each year from around the state, and have an excellent release rate. Please note: Only individuals with a rabies pre-exposure vaccination or acceptable titer within the past 2 years may work with the following animals: coyote, bat, skunk.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Learn wildlife care techniques:
Preparation of diets and enrichment.
Feeding and care of infant and adult wildlife.
Safe capture, restraint, and handling of wildlife.
Maintain animal enclosures and wildlife hospital in a clean and organized manner.
Gain experience in wildlife rehabilitation:
Triage skills: physical assessment and stabilization of incoming patients.
Administration of medications and fluids; wound care.
Maintain accurate records, treatment plans; assist with pre-release assessments.
Enclosure design and set up.
Assist in pre-release assessments and participate in releases.
Practice using PPE and safety techniques, identifying what techniques are needed in different situations.Each intern will complete one individual project before the end of their internship.
Work closely with staff, volunteers, and other interns in a supportive manner. Treat all team members with respect.
SKILLS:
• All interns will be very hands-on and should be confident in their ability to work in a variety of situations.
• Demonstrated ability to take both written and verbal direction; follow detailed instructions and complete assigned tasks.
• Proactive resolving problems with a positive outlook and can-do attitude.
